GitHub Star Count MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that allows Claude to fetch star counts from GitHub repositories.

Setup

Prerequisites

• Python 3.11+
• uv for dependency management
• GitHub Personal Access Token

Installation

1. Clone this repository:

   git clone https://github.com/yourusername/gh_mcp.git
   cd gh_mcp
   

2. Install dependencies:

   uv venv
   source .venv/bin/activate
   uv pip install -r requirements.txt
   

3. Create a .env file with your GitHub token:

   GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token_here
   

Usage

Running the MCP Server

Run the MCP server directly:

python star_count.py

Or use the provided shell script:

./run_star_count.sh

Claude Desktop Integration

Add the following to your Claude Desktop configuration file (~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json):
