DVID MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the DVID (Distributed, Versioned, Image-oriented Dataservice) system.

Description

This server provides MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration with DVID, allowing AI assistants to access and interact with DVID resources through a standardized interface. The server exposes DVID's HTTP API endpoints as MCP resources and tools.

Installation

# Install from the repository
git clone https://github.com/janelia-flyem/dvid-mcp-server.git
cd dvid-mcp-server
pip install -e ".[dev]"

Usage

Run the Server Directly

Start the server by running:

python -m dvid_mcp_server --dvid-url http://your-dvid-server:8000

Using with Claude Desktop and uvx

The DVID MCP Server is designed to work seamlessly with Claude Desktop, allowing Claude to interact with DVID servers through MCP.

1. Install the package using uvx:

uvx install dvid-mcp-server

2. Install the server in Claude Desktop:

# Using the package's install command
python -m dvid_mcp_server --install --name "DVID Server" --dvid-url http://your-dvid-server:8000

# Or directly with the MCP CLI
mcp install -m dvid_mcp_server --name "DVID Server"

3. For development, use:

mcp dev -m dvid_mcp_server --dvid-url http://your-dvid-server:8000

Using Configuration Files

You can use a JSON configuration file to specify server settings:

Environment Variables

• DVID_URL: URL of the DVID server (default: http://localhost:8000)
• PORT: Port to listen on (default: 8080)
• DEBUG: Enable debug mode (default: false)

# Install development dependencies
pip install -e ".[dev]"

# Run linting
ruff check .

# Format code
black .

# Run type checking
